Established in 1923
This year, the Youngstown Volunteer Fire Department is celebrating its 100th anniversary. First founded in 1923 to serve the small borough that had been inhabited since the early 1800s, the department wasn’t officially incorporated until March of 1946. The department has had several stations and garages on Main Street throughout their history and built their current four bay fire station, located behind their last station at 233 Main Street, in 1991.
Youngstown became responsible for the area of Baggaley when the Baggely fire station closed in January of 2002, and 19 years later also assumed responsibility of Whitney and Hostetter when the two departments merged together after several years of strategic planning.
Today, Youngstown has 40 active members and is looking forward to taking delivery of a brand new pumper engine they ordered in 2021. In the future, Chief Barry Banker says that the department is looking forward to remaining involved in the community and continuing to train more junior firefighters with their dedicated in-station junior firefighter instruction program, meant to begin junior’s on their state essentials class and be prepared to become fully certified firefighter by completing the final training module right when they turn 18.
